March 2010

A Message from our President

Division 18 of the Rocky Mountain District is holding a meeting on Saturday, March 13, from in Pagosa Springs. Lunch will be served. If anyone is interested in attending, please let me know. This is a great way to get to know other people from the clubs in our area. It is also great for anyone who might be interested in serving as an officer of our club or on our local board (hint, hint)!  Some of our current officers will be attending, so we could carpool if needed. Please call me if you’re interested or have questions.

Kiwanis News

JAKES Days Recap - We collected $354.00 in the donation jar. One of the attendees bought the remaining hot dogs and the leftover buns were donated to Grace’s Kitchen. The volunteer schedule will probably change next year.  Only 3 or 4 people are needed for set up in the morning and the rest of the volunteers can start at 11:00.  Deb is going to invite someone to one of our meetings to explain the purpose of JAKES so we can discuss making a club donation.

Club Sweatshirts - Lan is getting prices on Kiwanis sweatshirts which will be $20-22 each. They will be the same shirts as shown in the Kiwanis catalog for $22.00.  If you were not at the meeting and would like a shirt, please call or Lan or Eve.

Friends of Scouting – Representative, Dale Talley, gave a presentation on the history of the boy scouts.  In the Mesa Verde District there are 800 boys and 325 volunteers. In the Cortez area there are about 150 boys and 60 volunteers:

. 48% of funding comes from fundraisers held by the boys.

. 34% of funding comes from Friends of Scouting.

The funds are needed for accident and liability insurance for the boys and volunteers, as well as volunteers training expenses.  The Kiwanis voted to donate $500.
